AV Care Nightmare

Posted by Melo

After spending an entire day trying to remove this dreadful program called AV Care without success I finally decided that it would be much easier to just format my hard drive instead and it was. I did not know what AV Care was or how it got installed but my wife was using my computer that day. My guess is, she accidentally clicked something and installed the program, AV Care, without her knowing it. I later found out about it when, after booting the computer, the AV Care interface suddenly appeared and started scanning for viruses and other threats. It then reported that my computer was infected with all sorts of stuff and to remove them I need to pay for the software which, of course, I did not do.

AV "Don't" Care

AV Care was not unfamiliar to me and, thanks to Google,  I found out that it was a fake anti-virus program that tricks people in buying it by presenting its victim with a bogus infection report. Upon learning what AV Care was, I immediately removed it by uninstalling it. Although, the program did uninstall itself it seems that it has already did some damage to my computer like multiple processes of a certain windows application suddenly appeared which greatly slowed down my computer, Spybot – Search and Destroy won’t execute as well as a few other programs and a google installer kept on giving me error messages.

When I googled AV Care, the search results I got does not only contain information about it but also instructions on removing it. I tried a couple of the removal instructions and even installed a couple of those anti-AV Care programs. Unfortunately, none of them worked. After spending hours trying to fix my computer, I finally decided to just reformat and re-install my operating system which I did and it finally fixed everything.

I don’t know how AV Care got installed in the first place and my wife insisted that she only logged on to check for new e-mails and messages. My guest is that one of her e-mail is the culprit. Anyway, she is now banned from using computer. Ha ha ha!

AV Care looks like a legit program but it is not. If you have it installed then I strongly suggest that you remove it immediately. I had a very hard time trying to remove it which in the end forced me to just re-install my operating system. If you would like to learn more about what AV Care is then simply Google “AV Care” and you’ll find all the information you’ll need to protect yourself against it.

  • I sympathize with you on this. I’ve had a similar incident last year involving some wallpapers that got installed. I wasn’t as informed then about sites like this and it took me weeks to finally uninstall it successfully. So now I’m very careful and I try to be up to date with thel lastest info. Thanks for sharing.

  • The best and pretty much only way to every remove these infections is to use an anti-malware program called ComboFix, it is designed to remove these and is totally free, we use it at work all the time to fix clients pc’s with the same issue. The problem with these fake antivirus is they hide in system files etc so are very annoying to remove, but combofix seems to do a great job! http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

How long was AV Care up and running for before it was finally removed? It has been on my computer for maybe 30-40 minutes, how much damage would that do,i’ve uninstalled it and i’m running two different spyware programmes,Malwarebytes and Spyware Doctor.

    • For me? I can’t remember how long since I was not the one using the computer when it got installed. It could be minutes or it could be hours but I’m glad it’s out of my system. ^^
