When I first posted about Making Money In Second Life in this blog, I didn’t discuss it that much. I posted a few photos of Second Life and a couple of links to my other blog about Second Life, Virtual Worlds and MMORPGs. I’m sure many of those who happened to read it didn’t give it too much attention because, for many, Second Life is just a game, a glorified 3D chat room and the idea of Making Money in Second Life would sound kind of silly.
Making Money In Second Life? How can that be possible? It’s a game for crying out loud! This is where many people are wrong. Second Life is NOT a game. It’s a platform where new opportunities to make money exist. The Linden Dollars, Second Life’s Virtual Currency is Real Money because it can be converted to USD and can be withdrawn through PayPal.
Of course, if you believe that Second Life is nothing more than a game then there is no sense in even trying to convince you that it is not, that it is more than a game.
I have played many multiplayer online games like City of Heroes, City of Villains, Guild Wars, etc. but I have never made a single dollar from any of them. In fact, I even paid for a few them since most of them are not free. Even those so called free-to-pay games cost money specially when you start buying premium stuff from their Item Mall. Games will try to make you spend money. In Second Life, it’s up to you if you want to spend money or make money. The decision is all yours.
In 2009, I have earned a total of $2,579.39 USD in Second Life and I never realized it until today because I have never kept track of it. My practice was, once I get enough Linden Dollars I would convert it to USD and withdraw it through PayPal. Besides, I was busy doing other things like blogging and trying out new ways of make money online to even bother in keeping track of what I withdraw from Second Life.
I still can’t believe I made that much money in Second Life in 2009. I don’t have a big business in Second Life, I am not a Land Baron who buys and sells virtual land, I don’t own a club, I’m not a virtual escort, I’m not into the Adult Business in Second Life, I’m not a famous DJ or Fashion Designer, I’m not any of those. I hate to admit it but I’m a nobody in Second Life.
Just imagine, if a nobody in Second Life can make that much in a year then how much do you think those who owns big businesses, who are famous designers or creators or those who are celebrities in Second Life make? Honestly, I have no freaking idea but one thing is certain though, it’s way more than just $2,579.39 USD.
I’m sure some of you are already thinking of trying out Second Life but the problem most Newbies in Second Life face is the learning curve. When I first started in 2006, I quit as soon as I logged in. The next time I tried it in 2007, I stayed for a few hours and then left because I have no idea of what to do, where to go and where to acquire Linden Dollars which is the currency in Second Life, so I left.
6 months later, I tried again and this time I stayed. I learned how to create and started a small business selling my creations to other residents or members in Second Life. Today, that business is still a small business but, now, it’s making me a few USD each month.
How much did it cost me to get started? Nothing, because Second Life is FREE to join. Everything I spent in Second Life also came from Second Life. Yes it is possible to make money on Second Life but like anything that has to do with the Internet, it is highly competitive. I think the ones that make most money on Second Life are the creators but you have to know how to create and be able to establish your brand. Or you can become a shop affiliate.
I need to make some more money! maybe second life will help me, let wait and see.
A very comprehensive article with great and valuable pointers here that I had never known of. Thanks for passing on this info.
